If you are looking for a Museum that has many items that directly deal with Jefferson, this is probably not it. This does have many items that deal with the state of Texas, and many items that are just antiques. I will agree with one of the previous reviewers that some time needs to be spent updating the cards with the descriptions. The print is very small oln some of these, and most of them are getting very yellowed. If you are into antiques, this would be a nice stopping point for you. If you are looking for the history of Jefferson and the area, I'm afraid that you would be somewhat disappointed. Items in the museum are grouped into general categories, such as farm tools, or quilts, or dresses, etc. Within those broad categories, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of organization. There were some area that I found interesting while other areas didn't interest me at all. I have a bad back and it sometimes makes walking difficult. Climbing all the stairs was especially difficult that day. If you have any physical limitations, this is definitely NOt the place for you.

My husband and I went to this museum and both liked it. Three floors of antiques relevant to Jefferson. Nice architectural design of the building. A fun way to use free time.

Even if you don't enter it, the architecture of the Jefferson Historical Museum is magnificent. It originally housed the 1888 Federal Court House and U.S. Post Office building. If you do visit I suggest you climb up to the garret to look out over what once was the largest inland port in Texas.

Be sure to see the model train exhibit and go through the museum - the basement through the 3rd floor. Saw an apparition in the basement!!

Love the doll collection. It has a lot of old guns, arrowheads, Caddo Indian information, a gown worn by Lady Bird Johnson. A lot of antiques on three floors and a basement.

Liked most all of the museum. Just need time to read and see. The hostess was very cordial and sharing of her time and knowledge with us.

We agree with the previos review. We went here hoping to find a historical narrative of Jefferson and the surrounding area but found a haphazard collection, some of which was interesting but with little information. You could save the $7 admission and spend some time in Jefferson's antique shops.

Pretty lame, even by small-town museum standards...I had hoped to learn more about the whole Jefferson as navigable port thing, but mostly it's just a haphazard collection of things that people happened to donate. The provenance of most items is pretty suspect, and the treatment of archival materials is absolutely shameful -- this museum needs an intern from a reputable Museum Studies program, stat.

Wow! The best attraction in Jefferson. Great history here! Three floors of exhibits, plus a building in the back with a most wonderful model train display, built by a Jefferson native. It's wonderful that Jefferson keeps this history alive for all to see. The museum staff are so friendly, and the train guys are super! I loved the gowns, the piano, the Texas flag that went into space. My husband thought the barbed wire exhibit was unique, and we both LOVED THE TRAINS!

We went in to kill time before Gould rail car, but it was better than rail car. Staff was very nice, pay the extra for rail road tickets. The scale rail road is great. Little kids will love it. There are a lot of stairs. It is haunted too. I heard a woman crying in the restroom.

Neat little museum, LOTS of stairs so be prepared. Self-guided tour starts in basement and goes up 3 or 4 floors. Didn't take too long to go through museum.

Spent a half day here and had to make myself leave. We love history and there was so much to see and read about. I will have to go back to complete it all.

This museum inhabits the old courthouse on the west end of historic Austin Street. It is crammed full of antiques and collections of all kinds): dolls, firearms, spinning wheels, porcelain figurines, arrowheads, barbed wire, art, medical instruments, etc. You name it - it's probably got it. There's a basement and 3 floors to discover these treasures. Patricia, that sold us the tickets, was so lovely, gracious, and helpful. I really enjoyed hearing about her extensive travels. Did I mention the model railroad located in a separate building out back? It's amazing. The detail is way over the top. The gentleman docent was very knowledgeable and was eager to tell us all about the layout. I highly recommend both tours.

They have a collection that is hard to believe. There is stuff everywhere so look carefully and not miss anything!
