This museum is one of the best Smithsonian museums in all of Washington DC. It is a little off the beaten track and can be missed but is one of the most fascinating of all the Smithsonian museums. The collection has become more varied ove rthe last few years and contains some great art from the last two centuries up to today. There was the portrait of Washington on the 1 dollar bill, the Franklin on the 100 dollar bill, and a retrospective on the beatles, among many other fascinating exhibits to give an idea of the breadth of the collection. In two hours I only saw about 10% of the museum so one could spend the entire afternoon there. The gift shop was one of the best I've been to on history. This is a great museum for history buffs and lovers of early photography as well. Plan to spend at least 3-4 hours there to really take a lot of it in and you won't be disappointed. One of the great museums of America!!

The exhibit spaces and rooms were perfect in their balance and access to the art work. I was especially taken by the large statue of a seated person with draped head positioned at the end of a hallway designed to look like a winter garden setting. Wonderful

Yes, I probably didn't do it justice, but I had a free hour so I used it. After all, it's free admission. What drew me there in the first place was the desire to see the Steven Colbert Portrait (which is there for a limited time) which gave me a good laugh. It's hanging right between the Men's and Women's Restrooms. There is a lot to see here, I spent most of my hour in the Presidential Portrait Gallery which had some beautiful portraits of Presidents who served us. Well worth the short visit.

The Portrait Gallery has just enough major art when you don't have time for the National Gallery. We chose this one for time restraints. Exhibits are outstanding.

Between visits, I always forget what a wonderful museum this is. By looking at the people who made history in our county, I learn more and more about it.

Every year I am in DC, I try to stop in at least once to the National Portrait Gallery. The Gallery shares space with the National Gallery of Art; and, I love to venture into the center of the building, where the pavilion is covered with glass. Originally, this would be outdoor space; but, like the British Museum, in London, it's been converted to a delightful, relaxing space. That's necessary, as the exhibits are extensive!

There are surprises in store for those who would brave the austere name of the place. It is so much more than a bunch of portraits. It is history come alive.

The portraits are great but the history of the building and its use as the location of Lincoln's second inauguration ball make it a great place to visit.

All of the museums in DC are first rate; this is my personal favorite. The museum is a well thought out mixture of classical art, civil war commenders and presidential portraits. This is a must see for DC. (I felt bad for Richards Nixon, his portrait was so small)

You can see the portraits fairly quickly and move on to the paintings and La Farge window in the American Art museum. The best part of my visit was buying a fresh salad in the concession just off the courtyard and then enjoying the tranquillity of the covered courtyard with the reflecting pools.

This museum is an excellent place for seeing portraits but an even better place to learn history and the people who made it. Well worth the time!

This museum was recommended by my brother. It is very close to Chinatown which is where our hotel was. We took a nice walk about 4 blocks to the Museum and we had an amazing time . The building itself is an attraction. The art was amazing and I feel there is something for everyone. We spent several hours there and then went back the next day. There are free guided tours a couple times a day which was very informative.

A do-it-yourself class in American art history in and of itself and a great place to spend a rainy morning. The building is wonderful and there are great restaurants nearby.

The Portrait Gallery is, by definition, a both a historical and an artistic museum, that is the displays are at least as much about the subjects as about the works themselves, but some of the portraits are outstanding in as art in themselves. The collections -- mostly arranged by period and subject -- offer a range of perspectives on American history and society , The Gallery usually has a current display around some theme, like Civil War officers, or women scientists. A very nice outdoor cafe in warm weather.
