Even though the mine is buried and won't be accessible any more, the tour provides a lovely time to spend amidst the industrial magnificence of black 'n golden age of Ostrava's mining history. I loved the running belt-propelled-motor-thing!

Another superb technical museum in Ostrava. Well kept, well equipped, one can feel the time stopped at certain point and we just came in. 1/2 of it shows the everyday life the other 1/2 is strictly technical, showing machines and huge engines. They are in perfect conditions, mainly still operable / still working. I liked the guide, who is the former employee and one can feel his relationship to the place, he is really a hand on person in this place.

This museum is in a wonderfully preserved colliery which is in pretty much the same state it was in when it closed in 1994. All the exhibits are in their original location - there are no new buildings or anything from similar mines to build up a bigger picture of mining generally. All you can see here was actually used on this site, which is great for historical accuracy. The tours are led by ex-miners, so their knowledge is historically accurate too. Our guide had a dark sense of humour and shared a few funny and scary stories of a miner's life here. He really kept us engaged during the whole trip, which he filled with a human perspective you would never get just from reading a guidebook. The exhibits cover 150 years of mining development. One of my favourite parts was the winding gear motor and compressor room. This machinery was state of the art in 1912 when it was installed and it was still in use right up to the mine's closure. I also loved the feel of the museum, with its patina of dirt and coal dust intact outside and the clean but old and cracked institutional tiling on the walls inside. Nothing has been given a facelift just for tourists. The tour took nearly 2 hours, which could be a bit long for some people but the energy, knowledge and humour of our guide made it time very well spent. He was especially good with the children in our group, alternately fascinating and horrifying them with his first-hand stories of what it was like to work here.I recommend you bring a camera and maybe don't wear your best clothes because if you sit down anywhere for a rest, you'll pick up some history!Tours start at 0900, 1100, 1300 all year round, with an extra tour at 1500 from April and another at 1700 in July and August. They cost 90 CZK with concessions for over 65's, students up to 27 years old and children up to 6 years old.Tours are available in English and German for 180 CZK but must be booked at least one day in advance.

I consider this place better and more interesting than the similar Landek Park Museum (but instead of Landek, in Michal Colliery you do not go underground, the exhibits are only above).Note that the tour start only at 9:00h, 11:00h, 13:00h, 15:00h and 17:00h.Very recommended.

It is a great place! An old mining site in an unusual environment will take you back to the industrial times of Jules Verne. A great, funny guide with a huge knowledge (he was a miner himself, I suppose) of anything related. It is well worth a visit.
