We were at puerto Iguazu and took a day drive to see the Jesuit mission. About 3 hours. Be sure to take the tour with a guide or you will miss much! Such as the tree in the corner of the chapel in the wall that held up the roofOr the trees growing on the walls!Or the description of each area of the community. It's truly amazing anything is left from so long ago. There is also a small museum to visit while you wait for a tour.Very interesting

We were initially disappointed by the sound and light show in the evening at the Jesuit Mission in San Ignacio. The holograms were not clear and with a large audience it was difficult to see. The commentary is only in Spanish and was pro-Jesuit. However the following day we spent a few hours at the Mission and were enthralled with the ruins and it's history. It is a huge complex which includes the remains of a sizeable town where the Guarani who converted to the Roman Catholic religion lived for about 150 years. This is a World Heritage Site.We only visited the Argentinian Mission.

If you care about history or not do not miss a chance to visit San Ignacio. What the Jesuits built, some 30 reservations 11 of them in Misiones Argentina was an impressive achievement. Bringing Christianity to the guarani natives, at the same time they thought them trades how to produce goods and build a society. Also thought them to fight the Portuguese slave hunters, the bandeirantes.they even best them on the field too.Having been kicked out of the Spanish colonies in the 1700's the missions began to decay. The ruins are 250 kmts from iguazu and 50 from Posadas. Coming from iguazu it a whole day trip. But normally you'll also visit the Wanda mines along, also a good choice. Pretty good food at San Ignacio. Very good bilingual guides.

This Mission is mostly in ruins but very well kept being a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are some stunning carvings at places. The explanations are useful to help you imagine how it once looked. For its dimension are really amazing knowing that as many as 4,500 people once lived there. The dark red brown buildings make a good contrast to the environment. The park is lovely. The museum at the entrance is also interesting to visit.

When I arrived to this place the feeling was amazing... Energy invaded me and felt an unusual connection with this place. Jesuitic missions are very important in Argentina, and being able to visit such a formidable place was overwhelming. So much history, such advanced minds stayed in that place... A must if in Misiones

These ruins have remarkable history behind them. The unfinished church holds deep sentiments for the Christian folk.

Be sure to ask for a guided tour of the ruins, we got a tour from a last who spoke English and it was well worth it. She was able to tell us all about the history of the ruins as well as point out lots of interesting features. There are some really cheap souvenir shops right outside as well with local crafts made by the Guarani people. Be sure to stick up as these will double or triple in price around Iguazu area.

These ruins and the story behind them are amazing and not to be missed (I'm an archaeologist so I'm not talking wildly). You should also see Santa Ana and Loreto nearby - allow plenty of time. The journey from Iguazu is ridiculous - if you can't cope with San Ignacio's simple hotels then stay in Posadas - 1 hour journey and you can do all of the sites and end up with the very moving sound and light show. Believe me, there is not much 16th to 18th century archaeology in these parts of South America. I just wish we'd allowed time for the Paraguayan sites of Trinidad and Jesus via Posadas and Encarnacion - another time!

Ruins not overcrowded and lots of information in all languages. You are left alone to walk, wander and ponder about life, how it may have been.

On a recent visit to Iguazu we allocated a day trip to visit the Jesuit Ruins of San Ignacio Mini. We travelled there by taxi from Iguazu, a 240 km trip down. The trip took us through some beautiful countryside dominated by jungle and sawmill operations - non-offensive. San Ignacio Mini is just a part of an amazing story about the Jesuits and the Guarrani indians.back in the early to mid 18th Century. The story brought to life through the film "The Mission", and this attraction was a must see for us. The grounds are well maintained, haunting, and beautiful. The guardians of the site have provided good visual and sound displays to describe life at the venue and the story. We spent 5 hours there wandering around the ruins and left enriched by the experience.

The place is beautiful. An amazing history. Guided tours and information available in a lot of laguages (English, Italian and German, for example). The town needs more places to eat and stay.

San Ignacio Mini is a very impressive ruin near Missiones,Argentina. It was one of many missions in Paraguay and Argentina founded by the Jesuits in the 1600s For The Guarani people. There were thousands of Guarani in the area and the missions flourished until the late 1700s when the Jesuits were expelled. The on-site museum is well worth a visit.
