My friends & I stayed at this property over New Years for 5 days. Two - three months prior to arrival there had been no contact from the owners to confirm deposited money (three thousand, seven hundred + six hundred for bond), despite multiple e-mails & phone calls from myself requesting confirmation the monies had been received. When I finally received a phone call (two months later) to confirm the deposit & house details, the property owner had 'forgotten' multiple things we had previously spoken of; 1. How many people were staying (despite countless e-mails stating so), 2. That I had already confirmed arrival time (the owner was quite rude upon calling, demanding the arrival time and that she should not have to be following-up this a second time. Upon noticing she was wrong - no apology.)3. The deposited monies & exact amounts paid... scary thought.4. Confirmation that I could bring my dog... I have e-mail evidence of this and now she is stating he was never allowed! Upon arriving at the property, I had met with the property manager (different to the person I had been corresponding with). The property manager told me where to find the keys for the house and that the 'property owner was staying next door in a caravan', she whispered. This is the ONLY information I was given upon arrival, which is pretty sad, considering we just spent three thousand seven hundred dollars.I had to prompt her for additional information, eg; what days the bins go out (the bins were full at time of our arrival from previous tenants), additional charges I should be made aware of, where to find the house policy booklet, etc...On our second day my friends and I were having a few drinks on the porch and a stranger suddenly appeared in the backyard unannounced. To which we responded "Hi, can we help you?"As it so happened, this was the property owner. Her excuse for arriving unannounced, "I have washing to collect". This comment was made after peeling her eyes over each one of us and our beverages and personal belongings. We had a kind chat with her, informing her that her house was pleasant - still a little confused as to why she was there... and then she left.On New Years Eve we had some music playing (not loud by any means) at around 10.00pm. The neighbor kindly reminded us that it was 10.00pm and we immediately shut the music off and moved down to the beach, so as to not disrupt their children. The following day, two of us approached the neighbors to apologize for the music and that it wouldn't happen again. To which they responded "All good guys, we'd be over there with you had we not have the kids with us haha, we appreciate you coming over."That very same day the property owner, once again, arrived unannounced, to inform us that she had heard the neighbors ask us to shut the music off (this was something she had over-heard, the neighbors did NOT approach her).We replied in kind, stating that we have spoken with the neighbors, they are by no means upset and as soon as they told us to shut the music off, we did so immediately. There were no further complications at that time and enjoyed our last 2 days of our holiday.Upon arriving back from our holiday, I had received absolutely no contact (surprise surprise) from the property owner regarding our bond - six hundred dollars.I had called twice prior to leave messages for her to call me back, and when I finally received the phone call from her, it was to tell me "I will have to call you back, I'm exceptionally busy with other bookings right now". To which, I had no other option but to accept. When I received the fourth and final phone call (which was not made when she had committed to making it) it was to inform me that there will be deductions from our bond.*I might mention that we had put a stein on a towel, and that we were aware of the implications - $20.00 bond deduction.* - Other than this, my friends and I left the house in the exact same shape as upon arrival. The property manager had stated that we owed - $20.00 for the stained towel (this was fine, as I was already aware).$20.00 for an unclaimed towel left there...? ...Go figure.$80.00 for the bins to be emptied - *note; when we had arrived the bins were full, something I mentioned to her on the phone while discussing the bond, to which she retorted with disgust and disbelief, which then turned into a heated discussion that continued to go around, and around in circles.THEN, she tried to tell me we had put a chip in the dining room table, but she won't deduct that out of out bond because 'she wasn't sure it was us'!??!!Now let me please elaborate on this; at no time other than doing a quiet puzzle, did we use this table. And then to to tell me you're not going to charge us because you're not sure if it was us!??! This woman is all over the shop... I DO NOT recommend this stay to anyone. As far as i'm concerned, we were excellent tenants. No complaints from anyone, we were clean and tidy and left the property in exactly the same condition as it had been in prior to us staying. The struggle continues...

We were told of this "superb beach" on the outskirts of town, so decided to walk there. Our phone's GPS was helpful, followed the road on the way there, took a path through the forest and along the coast on the way back.I guess April was off season as we were pretty much alone there, it was a really nice walk, we got to speak to a few locals on the way back in what looked like a less affluent side of town and every one was very welcoming. It made for a nice walk and a lovely afternoon before we headed back into the picturesque old town...

Ferrando Beach is about 3 kilometers from downtown Colonia del Sacramento. The neighborhood around this beach is not the best...therefore a foreign tourist should not visit it after sundown. There are neither hotels and/or restaurants bordering the beach.

A friend and I went there in mid-march (which is off season), so there was no one else there. That made it pretty much a private beach! It was very relaxing, although the water was a little cold. It's only a 150 Uruguayan pesos ride from the main town, so it's definitely a good spot for a beach day in Colonia. Look out for horses!

During our recent trip to Buenos Aires we decided to hop over to Colonia. The ferry over the Rio de Plata was great and well organized. A tip is to use SeaCat operators. We bought tickets at half the price to the main operators Busquebus. We didn't arrange tours thinking we will wing once there. However we dud go on New Year' s day and it was busy. We managed to book a hop on hop off bus - busTuristico- but after wasting nearly hours and not getting any further than the port we walked back to claim our money. Apparently only one bus was operating (which they neglected to tell us). However they were quite good at refunding our money. But we we were at a loss what yo do AND we had 3 children with us who we're looking forward to a beach day ( which was our main intention of visiting Colonio). Luckily the owners of Vurritos a rental company organized us a lift to Playa Ferrando. What a blessing! We settled at the local beach bar and spent a relaxing day swimming, sleeping, chatting, pleating and drinking. The owners of the bar a delightful couple and we discovered their pizza which was great and their chips and dips. Try the local beer Pilsen. We were away from the main beaches in the tour routes- away from the maddening crowds. Just an idyllic day. Oh yes you can hire loungers etc from the beach bar lounge on an hourly rate. The kids spent the whole day swimming. The water is brown but not dirty. There are locals milling around and scooting up and down but made interesting people watching. Beach patrol was on duty. The bathroom facilities are ok at the beach but gets worse during the course of the day. If going to Colonia either make it a beach day or organize your tours upfront otherwise there is not much to do.

As a Brazilian, I know beaches. Playa Ferrando really looks like a sea beach, although it is on Rio de La Plata. The only down, is that the beach is kind of noisy. There are a lot of locals, riding their motorbicycles back and forth. It is also a little dirty: don't be surprised if you find a couple of plastic bottles on the sand...It is a shame.

If you go to Colonia, try to go to Ferrando Beach. It´s a beach situated among the woods. Really nice to have a nice view of the river, walk with your wife or girlfriend among the beach, and have some drink in situ. The beach is not so big but it is another option to do in Colonia if you are tired of the hotel pool.

A very beautiful spot just outside the city of Colonia. Walk (or drive) to the end of the main drag (Flores). You will see two gas stations. Turn right after the far one and walk 1 - 2 kms... right at the round about, another 100 mtrs you will be at the beach.Just before the beach is a road that leads down to a old gravel mine, which is now a beautiful lake.. the locals secret, you won´t find any tourist here. The beach, where you can collect shells, quartz and drift wood is also very beautiful. Usually its deserted, but on holidays it can get crowded. There is a bar run by a groovy young couple whom I imagine would be struggling, so good if you can support them. If you are game there is a squatter village behind the dunes, where the people build houses on government land, keep horses, run businesses. It was to be the sight of a new Hilton, but they refuse to budge and the govt can´t move them as the squatting laws of Uruguay prevent it. They even tap into the power grid, and it is illegal for the power company to disconnect them. They cut trees to sell firewood and fish for their dinner. It´s an interesting tour, but dress down and don´t go at night. It seems to be quite family oriented.

I stayed on full day at Ferrando, definitely a recommended spot if you like the beach. Fresh river, wide beach, comfy. Aprox 20 minute bike ride. Best: Quiet, at least in November, better suited for couples. Not so good: If you can take your own food and drinks, the bar is nice but far from the beach. You won't have to go through the trouble of walking in hot sand + you will save $$.

Very quiet beach away from the hustle of this busy little village. Not sure about walking to or from it in the dark, but a must to visit during the day.

Having read about Playa Ferrando on this site, an article on a newspaper website, and some brief notes in a guidebook, we thought this was worth the effort visiting. Now although we went against the advice and walked there, making the final destination even more disappointing, I have to say, that regardless of how you get there, it is certainly no better than any of the beaches around Colonia itself. The backdrop of the Zona Franca industial site doesn't do anything for the beach, and you probably don't want to stray into the residential area around it. True, there are plenty of people swimming in the lagoons, but this isn't at all idyllic. You will feel much more relaxed on the beach on the Colonia seafront. There is a path onto the beach to the west, via the old railway tracks, but I would advise against it, partly due to the neighbourhood you pass, but also because it may involve walking over an old small railway bridge. The recommended path to the beach is from the north, which is why the tourist office recommends taking a taxi there.
