Directions: From town drive East on 2nd street to McBride (Rt 16 East) then turn right on Wantage toward the fish hatchery. I suggest parking as far up the road as you are comfortable driving. The potholes on the dirt road are massive, so unless it's an SUV or rental car don't drive too far past the fish hatchery. We have a Subaru Forester and parked near the waterfall where the road narrows. Distance: 7 miles RT (or longer if you want to go further) The hike:This is more of a walk than a hike; it is easy but a steady climb. It would be nice for mountain biking as well, but not very technical on a bike. Be aware that there are a few pickup trucks from town that come up here to picknic, and maybe to party at night. We were out on a Saturday and met 4 trucks with older folks and families. All very nice folks. We were came in to town on the BC ferry and needed a place to exercise the dogs for a day.... this definitely did the trick!

an attraction, but it is a nice little drive. If you are a hiker it's probably a nice hike as well. I drove, took in the view, and it certainly gives you another perspective of Prince Rupert, but compared to flying a helicopter over the mountains on the way to Kemano, it is average, but still very nice!

First of all it is a long and difficult walk.Summit of Mount Hays is 732 m / 2402 ft.We parked our car at the Oldfield Creek hatchery on Wantage Rd and we took the gravel road, on the way (on the left) you can see an old command post dating from the WW2.It is at least a 10 km walk (4 hours) when you get to the subalpine meadows take sometime to relax and watch the bald eagles. From the summit of the Mt Hays, if it's a clear day it is possible to see the Queen Charlotte islands and the peaks of Alaska. You also have a great view of the Prince Rupert Harbour, Metlakatla and Dodge Cove. The city of Prince Rupert should exploit a lot more it's mountain, it is an hidden gem waiting to be polish for the tourists and rediscover by Ruperties.
