You've got to see this during your stay in Nicaragua. Great place to take pictures and enjoy the heat. Nearby you have the national palace and the presidential palace, very secure due to many security guards hanging around.

The facade and bell towers of the Old Cathedral of Managua may look impressive but as you get closer you'll see there's almost nothing else left of the structure due to 1972 earthquake. This is beautifully lit at night so do not miss this gem!

It is worth admiring. While the earthquake seriously damaged the structure, stands firm as challenging at the time.

Lovely square with a beautiful old cathedral. Would be wonderful to see it restored to its former glory one day, but for now it is a great reminder of the power of earthquakes. Worth a visit

Nicaragua is a country full of history and many interesting tourist attractions. I enjoyed the 2 years spent there, giving me an opportunity to see many different places. Volcanoes, rain forest, high altitude mountains, markets, cafes. I loved it all. However, my very favorite activity was horseback riding along the beach!

A cool place to bring visitors. You can't go inside as it is structurally unstable due to the earth quake which leveled most of downtown Managua. You can only imagine how beautiful it must have been as you walk around and look through the open spaces.

This landmark still stands, a microcosm to the tourist industry of the city of Managua. It's condemned as fencing blocks the entrance of birds and people. You have to look and imagine. Time marches on and funds, apparently, are not there to refurbish. The cathedral is near Salvador Allende and the National Palace, so all "sights" can be combined in short order. Maybe the current political regime will put dollars into the area so that they can make dollars. But, it is still worth a look and photo op.

The cathedral is massive. Even though it was condemned, it still looks majestic on such a large site. The remains should be viewed as an open-air museum.

Its a landmark, the scarfs of the time are evident, great place for pictures, visited in the morning of January 16th,

Downtown Managua is awful. There is really nothing to see. We came just after Christmas, and there were many tacky adornments everywhere which made everything look worse. The cathedral itself is a ruin as others have said, but it doesn't seem to have ever been beautiful... Don't bother going there unless you have massive amount of time in town.

Nice view against the clear blue skies, terrific to see the 1972 damages and to imagine how huge the quack must have been. Nice half day trip in combination with the miniature old managua, salvador allende puerto, the Ruben Dairio theater and a look at the lake Managua. A full day trip if combines with the new cathedral at MetroCentro, Tiscapa canopy.

This cathedral has seen a lot of Nicaraguan...two major earthquakes and a Revolution...scars clearly visible on this beautiful historic church. You can see the damage incurred during the great quake of '72 but more importantly bullet and shell holes that are evidence of the 1979 Revolution. Our tour guide informed us that this was also the sight of violent excutions during the war. It is a sober reminder of the turbulent history of Nicaragua and remains a monument to the strength of the people of Nicaragua.

I was expecting an actual functioning cathedral, but this building is basically a ruin at this point. It's cool to look at from the outside, but we didn't spend much time here. A good pitstop, a historic building worth checking out, and it's free!

If you like ruins this is the place to go. very strange and looking odd place since it was damaged by earthquakes...but it gives a strong personality to managua that has not many ancient buildings

This was an amazing site. From a distance it looked like an active cathedral. As you get closer you notice it abandoned. There is on sight security, but I was able to get a couple up close peaks. It looks like they hold events in the courtyard. I was the only person within sight when I visited.
