Have been coming here for years. Nice location, easy access, but inadequate lot parking. Fortunately the S.O. And H.P. do not actively enforce no-parking regs by this beach. The surf has been washing in large amounts of oil/tar, and you see large globules in the sand up and down the beach. A major pain to remove from skin and clothing. Fortunately I was in a rental car and not my wife's new car. Eeeek!

Beautiful sea coast! We saw sea lions out in waves! Loved the mussels and aquatic life on the rocks! Looks cold, but was very nice temperature!

Part of the Santa Monica Mountains network of trails and a bit West of Malibu. Although there was a fire in adjoining Sycamore Canyon, the crisped undergrowth does not detour from the wonderful ocean views available on these trails. Point Mugu State Park (and accompanying Overlook Trail) is accessed via the Sycamore Canyon Campground: Go to the hike speak site for a step-by-step narrative of where to park and how to get started on the trail (it reads more complicated than it really is and they do a better job of explaining how to get onto the trail than I can). This is a hike best done in sturdy shoes (Not a trail for flip-flops) and it does have a couple of, initially, steep rises but the effort is worth it! On a semi-clear day you can also see the Channel Islands. Tip: Take some time to study the ocean just beyond where the waves start to swell - those large, underwater, grey shadows moving parallel to the beach are seals! Plan on spending at least 2 hours on this not-terribly-arduous hike and allow time to find points of reflection! Happy trails!

Make sure you hike La Jolla Canyon when you go to Point Mugu State Park. The hike to the vernal pool only takes several hours, yet you get to go over a small water fall, venture through a oak woodland, while watching deer scramble across the trail. Mountain bikes are not permitted in La Jolla Canyon. Simply awesome. The other hike is up Sycamore Canyon. It is also scenic, the only problem is you have to share the trail with mountain bikes. Most bikers are courteous, however several just do not want to share the trail, ruining a good hike. The park is recovering from the fire. That is part of the continuing adventure of exploring Point Mugu State Park.

If you have seen the ads for the Chevy Malibu you have seen Point Mugu State Park! The ads are shot on the Pacific Coast Highway and feature the park especially Point Mugu rock. Located at the top of the PCH on the edge of Ventura County, this is the real California you are looking for just a short drive from LA. The park itself has beach access, bathrooms and some great hiking trails. Great views from above and on the beach. Also don’t miss the great dune, which is not a dune but more of a great sandy slope just a mile down the road. Kids love to climb up and slide down. Also don’t miss the hike up to the flag pole on Point Mugu. The trailhead is on the north side of Mugu Rock across from the Seabee firing range. It is a short but tough mile hike to the top. The views on a clear day are fantastic! You can see all the Channel Island, north to Santa Barbara and south to Catalina. It is worth the effort! If you are just visiting LA and want to sneak off for a few hours to experience the real Southern California drive up here. Your time will be well spent!

There are several parks within 50 miles of this one all are very near the beach and have great facilities, the gold coast is a real deal.
