We can see this river from our terrace at home. It's a beautiful walk, the views of surrounding countryside fantastic. Lots of points of interest along the route and a stunning place to swim. Along with the birds, the noise of the frogs, turtles and the odd horse or donkey it's a fantastic day out with a picnic or a ramble for an hour. Take a camera !

Walking along either side of the river offers glimpses of history with old mills and an old arms factory to explore, watercourses and fabulous boulders, musical tinkling of goat bells and rushing water of creeks. Cork forest with mushrooms, wild flowers, take a picnic!

The river houses terrapins, while bird-life includes nightingales, Cetti's warblers and griffon vultures.

The Hozgarganta River passes on the side of Jimena de la Frontera facing the Parque Natural de las Alcornocales, i.e, the Cork Oak National Park. There is a very enjoyable walking trail starting at the Jimena camp ground, down to and along the river and into Jimena proper. Perhaps a leisurely hour and a half if you don't stop. However, many people like to do exactly that, since there is a beautiful swimming hole about halfway around. Once we were there, a group of close to fifty high school students and their guides came from Malaga for this experience on a warm Spring day. As far as we could tell, they were from an outdoor education class, and they certainly enjoyed themselves. The water level in the Hozgarganta, as in many rivers in Andalucia, varies quite a bit. However, the main swimming hole at Jimena seems to remain pretty constant even through long periods of drought. Come and enjoy it!

The river below Jimena has some great swimming holes . A 10 minute walk through beautiful scenery (hills, gorges etc.) to the river. A few good places to get in and one large rock - the locals jump off the top into the river. A few spots to dive in - very clean water with a few little fish. Lovely and cool on a hot day. We went three or four times and the kids loved it and didn't complain about the walk

You need to take lots of water and be prepared for some rough bits and a steep climb at the end. The canal which was built along side it is very interesting and the scenery beautiful

We met some holiday makers here in the village of Jimena de la Frontera and were telling them some of the stuff to see and do here in July...well, who would guessed their number one pick would be swimming in the river? They were 68 and 70 respectively and loved the walk down from the village via the very pretty path. We only saw two other people that afternoon and they were runners along the trail. Pack a picnic and come and enjoy Jimena and the Hozgarganta River's clean waters! There is a lot more to do here too!
