Unless you want to travel to Greenland you won't see this! Try the Finnish traditonal smoke sauna (old fashioned inwards heated sauna)... Absolutely fabulous. And if you get the founder himself to give you the presentation, it's priceless..

Nanoq is a one man's dream come true. This museum celebrates both the passion of a polar traveler and the far northern way of life - now almost extinct. There is also plenty to see outside the museum, for example a whole village built by the founder himself.

Jakobstad

A small, but interesting surprising museum that is nice to visit once or twice in a lifetime and to take foreign guests to.

Great place to visit and so unexpected! It has quite an extensive collection of buildings and artifacts, it was well worth the stop to see it! I was amazed at what I learned and appreciated the guides that take you through. Really well done!

I am an anthropologist, so I am very picky about my museums. This museum was created by a man with an enthusiasm for the Arctic. Hence, it is not professionally curated, but I was surprised at how interesting it was nonetheless. It consists both of a central building with LOTS of artifacts, photographs, and history of Arctic explorers, as well as a Skansen-like outside, with genuine Arctic buildings, cabins, and even a small church that has been moved there, and where both services and weddings actually do take place! You can explore inside these cabins and imagine living there in Arctic conditions year round, or where military launched their forays, etc. Children will love this, and so will adults that are young at heart. We had an exclusive guide, who, although new at the museum, gave us a very good tour. All in all, a very good experience, which I highly recommend!

Didn't expect to find this here, and indeed we were taken there, it quite far away from everything. But, there are some interesting items from Greenland and other arctics, introducing the Extreme Northern way of life and some Extreme South exploring.

This is the best place to visit when you come to Jakobstad in June-August. First of all, it is the only place of its kind in the world : it has been founded by a private person Pentti Kronqvist, an adventurer with Greenland and other artic areas as his specialities. You need to have a guide to fully enjoy this very special place (every item in the area has its own history) you need to understand, that this is the result of one man's passion...

This museum is rather unique in this part of Finland with a focus on the Arctic - expedictions and traditions. In addition to the "normal" museum, Nanooq has plenty of stuff to see. The site alone is beautiful and reasonably priced.

I had guests from Canada, so I took them to visit Nanoq , a museum about the last indigenous Arctic people. They loved the unique arctic museum in Jakobstad. We had an excellent guide, Ida-Maria, who told us about the collections of the museum and also showed us the interesting buildings outside the museum. The newest building is a lovely church, which is a copy of the world’s northernmost church, build 1909 in Greenland. The altarpiece at the church is amazing. This was my forth time to visit this unique museum.

My visit was at the end of autumn so no ice and snow, but the feeling of bare simplicity was very strong in Fabåda. Genuine tools and constructions a scattered thru the forest like at a genuine camp. It really gives a taste of how primitive life used to be in northern latitudes.

Nanoq was one of the most positive experiences I have had for a longest time. This museum is built and managed by a private person, who has collected all the items during a long time. You definitely must have a guide to accompany you, since they will explain the history behind the exposition. Especially I appreciated the history and stories of race to the North and South Pole. This museum gives an overview how the life in the arctic environment really is.

If you visit Pietarsaari/Jakobstad this museum is just a must to see. In the world it does not exist so many arctic museums, and in Finland there are two, One in Rovaniemi and so this. The museal area is filed with arctic memories from the past and I recommend a guided tour in the museum because the topic is odd and the storytelling very interesting. If you get the founder Bosse to guide you - then you will have a memory for your lifetime.
