This museum was recommended to us while enjoying a wonderful lunch at the Crow's Nest in Cong, a lovely town also well worth a visit. Although I travel a fair amount, I am not a great tourist, preferring wandering about villages to museums. But I found this museum to be just tremendously interesting. The wonderful, caring and intelligent manner in which the historical material on the evolving lives of the Irish people was presented captured your interest and sparked your curiosity. What an exceptional place! Even the setting is compelling. I am very thankful for the kind recommendation to go there! I believe that you will be too!

Went half term with our boys aged 10 and 12, they really enjoyed the museum. Plenty of really good exhibits covering all aspects of country life. They particularly enjoyed the police and crime exhibition, we managed to hear a little of the talk which was very interesting. There is a nice coffee shop worth a visit as well. Grounds are lovely for a walk.

I just loved how its on a beautiful piece of land, an old country manor. Very well kept grounds with a lovely green house. The museum itself gives TONS of info on how our annestestors went about farming, fishing and cooking. I found it well layed out with great facility's. Kids and adults would love it!

Visited the museum on my way home. Very extensive, many exhibits and really interesting museum. It's great to learn more about our own history. The museum goes on for four floors. Would spend two hours here not more. Truly a great museum and the best thing is it's free

had a great time at this free museum which had 5 floors of really interesting stuff, the house is beautiful but you are only able to see 3 rooms which was disappointing as I would of loved to of seen the upstairs. but well worth a visit.

The museum offers a fascinating view of rural Ireland in by-gone years. Many other Heritage Centres throughout the country have bits and pieces put together on their special interest, but here everything is pulled together in a comprehensive way. It takes a lot of time and patient reading and viewing to see it all, but everyone would find something of interest to them. Our visit was lovely but it had a bad 'sting in the tail'. After viewing the museum we went to the Coffee Shop for something to eat and the prices of pastries, ie: the cookies, was highway robbery. Excuse the pun, but we left with a bad taste in our mouth.

This is a FREE hidden gem, the initial house I found disappointing as it consisted of just two rooms the public can access, but my disappointment was short lived when I went into the gallery, it's four floors filled with very informative historical artifacts that are excellently laid out, I am not one for history but found this fantastic, and the grounds are gorgeous to extend your trip if you're only visiting on a day out

This is a lovely place to visit for all ages, loads to see and do.The exhibitions are very interesting. Its great to see all the old farm implements, receipts from the old shops of Castlebar, the garments people wore, the old customs. There is always a competition on for the children, something similar to a treasure hunt. The grounds are beautiful, and there are lovely walks in the woods. Its a great place for a picnic. There is a lovely coffee shop there too and a gift shop. A family could spend the day there, bring a picnic and you have a cheap day out.

Very interesting, interactive museum. In beautiful grounds even in late November (with the sun shining). Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

I live in the west of Ireland and whenever people come up to visit I always take them up to see this place. Its a very underrated place to visit. The exhibits are great quality and there is a lot of information provided, some of which is even digitised. The grounds are beautiful and there is lots to see and do. There is usually an event on or display or workshop aswell so check the website to see whats on.You couldnt spend the whole day there but its a great way to spend an afternoon or morning.

We have visited this museum a number of times. Probably the best times are spring and summer if you wanted to make it a family day out and bring a picnic. I agree with other reviewers that it is difficult to big up a museum but in this case definitely on to visit. Firstly it is free, as are all of the national museums in Ireland and secondly the location is lovely. Park up, take in some of the exhibits, have lunch and continue on the tour. One of my favourites is the telephone that you pick up and listen to stories told by locals in the area about country life in their time. Take time

Have been twice and unlike other reviewers I think it's not good I can remember some of these things being in use! However it was good for my now ex-pat family & I'm sure it will be interesting to them in years to come, so it's great the artefacts have been collected. Was good to see the old Halloween customs explained and be reminded that it's not just commercial clap trap. My kids are a bit small for museums so the play areas were welcome & a nice touch. Grounds were nice. Shop & cafe had good selections. 2 rooms in the old house was hardly worth it but I assume they are working on more. It is free though which is great. The church & tower you can see across the way is worth investigating too.
