I have seen many newsreels on this most disturbing of events but this was the first time I have ever stood in front of one of the cattle trucks used for transport; one half, 8 horses, the other 40 men;very chilling.Inside an extraordinary collection of artefacts. In mid November, we were the only people there.

This museum is an extremely interesting place to visit. From the time you step out of your car you are greeted by wartime music playing from the loud speakers in the square. Inside after paying a small entrance fee (4 euros), you are transported back to the 2nd World War. It is very moving in places, but always very interesting. There are displays of German soldiers, British soldiers, American soldiers and of course the most important the Resistance. All with collections of their equipment and armaments. Also shown is the way of life that the inhabitants had to endure. The section about the Deportation to the camps is very moving. It is hard to imagine how some people survived these dreadful places.

I guess my title needs some explanation. As I was staying in the Laon area over Christmas, I set out to see this museum. I checked the website and saw that the opening hours were limited over the holiday period, but tried to make sure I arrived when the posted hours were. In short, this didn't work. I arrived to find a paper notice on the door with slightly different timings, but rather than wasting the journey, I did look at what parts of the exhibits can be viewed from the outside. There is a boxcar (as used in the deportations), an armoured scout vehicle, and an aircraft - all easy to view. What made the trip worthwhile was the period engine set with the boxcar. I have been to several deportation and Holocaust museums but this is the first that I have come across with the engine. It just set the mood a bit more, the pinkish-red boxcar (so familiar from such visits) and the green engine ahead of it on what seemed to be a rail platform. It really set a mental image.I did try a second visit to the site a couple of days later, the lights were on, but the door was again locked. I would love to see the rest of the exhibit, and perhaps on some future trip I will.If you are in the area, give it a try.

During a recent 3 week holiday in the Aisne valley we had a spare day and decided to visit this museum and we were very pleased we made the effort. It is small but very comprehensive museum devoted mainly to the Resistance in this part of France. Most of the exhibit descriptions are in French but they all have short footnotes in English. The museum is very well laid out and the different sections are easy to follow. Another part of the museum covers the deportation to the concentration camps which is always very moving. There is also a display of wreckage of a FW190 and a Lockheed P38 including the stories of the 2 pilots. Looking through the Museum visitor book it seems that not many British people have visited. It is a little bit of the main routes but if you have time make the effort, you will not be dissapointed.
