A lovely interior which is not hinted at from the outside! Continue past the somewhat plain exterior to a delicious experience inside

Ferrara is a city of charm and character and with so many beautiful places to see, the architecture and light, colours and warmth of the people all make this a wonderful experience.

Very beautiful & impressive outside. The facade is all marble with delicate carvings. Since it was built over 5 centuries the style is mixed: Gothic & Romanesque.I liked the interior as well, it shouldn't be missed.I join the reviewers who ask to open the Italian churches at midday. As a tourist I can't afford myself to wait 3 hours till it opens again in the afternoon. That's why sometimes I don't have another alternative but to give up & just continue my trip, which is a shame.

The cathedral is worth a visit and the cardinal was performing the service so there was wonderful music and lots of pomp. Beautiful church in a beautiful town.

Very impressive to turn around with so numerous and nice detailed decorations outside. Unfortunately, the inner atmosphere doesn't reflect the power of the religion of the period in which it was built. Anyway, it's true that our poor judgment is highly influenced by the visit of Rome's St Peter, which presents similar inside architectural details. Sorry, we should have visited this cathedral first...

A medieval basilica in a medieval city. What's the most striking is the facade, in Romanesque style representing the typical fashional design then as the construction started in the 12th century then, over the next five centuries construction work had been on and on encompassing Gothic and Renaissance remodification then, after a fire in the 18th century, the interior undertook a Baroque style decoration...wow, what a history out of the historical city!

Why do Italian cathedrals always close for three hours in the middle of the day, even on a religious feast day. The heat of midday is just the time when the poor tourist wants to get off her feet and sit and contemplate eternity in a beautiful church. Especially when it starts raining.

The exterior of the building was splendid but the interior seemed very dark and dull. It had been remodelled to create a baroque interior which was not to my taste.

grangrimorio

A massive cathedral where different styles (Romanesque,Gothic, Baroque) are well mixed together in a perfect equilibrium.

Beautiful romanesque facade combined with with large, impressive but dark baroque interiors. Definetely worth to stop for a while.

We visited the cathedral on the evening of the benediction of the Palii when candles are offered by representatives of the ducal courts of the eight districts. We witnessed the processions arrive at the cathedral (and leave after the mass) composed of knights and ladies, musicians, flagwavers, and men-at-arms, all in medieval costume. It was wonderful to see the imposing cathedral inside all lit up and decorated - and the choir and organist are very good. Afterwards the flag waving and tossing in front of the cathedral (and the next day's flag wavers competition in the parade ground) was an exciting experience

Very nice building. I liked the exterior. It's in great shape and really easy to access. Interior is large but not as impressive as the exterior.

Beautiful from the outside. Peaceful, feels very large and impressive on the inside. Well preserved. Easy to visit; the front plaza of the Cathedral seems to be the main place in Ferrara for people to congregate and meet.

Across from the Piazza Municipio and connected to the Archbisop's palace by covered walkway, this cattedrale was consecrated to San Giorgio the martyr in 1135. Clad outside with a romanesque facade and renovated inside in Baroque style, the basilica is massive in size for the population. The bell tower in white and pink marble is 15th century. It survived the two big earthquakes well- 1570 and 2012. Worth a visit!
