The construction of this archiepiscopal castle, originally a water Castle, started around 1200. By the French destroyed in 1689 during the Palatine succession war. This southernmost fort of the Cologne archbishops was integrated in the fortifications, but also against the city protected with moats; presumably established past 1167, mentioned in 1331, in 1359 conquered by the citizens, in 1367 rebuilt under Archbishop Engelbert, 1491 last enlargement with Wing Tower and increase of the the donjon, destroyed in 1689. Older building parts from ca. 1370 in basalt lava, younger parts in quarry stone, bergfried around 1370, round Tower 1519, palast largely 1370, remnants of a wall, ring moat with drawbridge. The cannonballs, which were piled up in pyramid form in the castle garden, originate from the period of the Thirty Years' War.
