We were staying in the Murg Valley and did a full day in Baden Baden. In the late afternoon we went up the funicular (no driver; no lines; the train was waiting just for us) and walked around the top of the hill. You have a great view of the city, the Rhine Valley and the northern part of the Murg Valley.

We stayed at the Waldcafe in Baden Baden which is a wonderful guesthouse/restaurant within walking distance of the Merkur. (I have reviewed the Waldcafe separately). We took the cable car up the mountain to the top, and then climbed the observation tower to the top for some spectacular views. It was a clear sunny day so we had a marvellous view all around. There was an elevator in the tower but I don't think it went all the way to the very top, so you still have to walk up some of the way. Also, there are several walking trails of some distance that you can take but we didn't do those. There is also a restaurant there so you can sit outside on a sunny day and enjoy the view and a meal. A unique experience and well worth a visit but maybe not with very young children. It was very reasonable to go up in the cable car which went up and down quite often, no long waiting lines. (4 euros?)

Went up the furnicular tram which was self controlled. It was beautiful on the top but was a shame it was raining so we couldn't enjoy it's full glory. Not bad for €4 return and defo worth it in good weather.

Panoramic views of the Black Forest and the city of Baden-Baden from the top, a playground, great picnic spot and point of departure for day hikes in the area or just back down into town.

Not too crowded, reasonable prices for food in the restaurant and amazing views from the observation tower.

During a stay in Alsace, France, we decided to hop over the border with Merkur Mountain as one of our main destinations. As we discovered, it's worth the trip. We were visiting with our three young kids, and it's a place that works great for families as it's easily accessible (plenty of parking or bus stops at the bottom by the funicular) and the funicular itself is a fun trip up, taking you to the top to easily enjoy all the park has to offer.Unfortunately, our winter visit ended up being a completely foggy day. We couldn't see a thing from the top. Not a thing. And we were rather unprepared to make the most of it from there, so here's a few tips we learned by observing the more regular visitors. If it's snowed recently, there will be plenty at the top. (The day of our visit, there was a dusting in town and at least a good 10 centimeters on the mountain.) With that in mind: -They don't shovel or plow up there; strollers are useless, leave them in the car.-Wear all your snow gear. It's definitely a fun place to explore and play if you're properly dressed.-Bring a sled. Most families were taking the train up, then gradually sledding down the paths, which looked like a great time!! Follow those tips and a visit will still definitely be worth it even if you can't take in the view.

Great view of the surrounding mountains and the city below. On a clear day, take a trip up the watch tower and you won't regret it. A great place for family picnics or just to laze around.

My wife and I recently took the trip up the mountain to watch the hangliders, and to observe the views. All I can say is that this was a phenomenal way to spend some spare time while in Baden Baden. We loved watching the paragliders taking off from the mountain top and cruising on the thermals above our heads.Great views.Easy to get to (various scenic walking routes up/down or a 2 Euro cable car).Tower on the top which was free to climb/had a free lift, for even better panoramic views.Cafe at the top for coffee and cake.

The funicular is easily reached by public transport from the centre of Baden-Baden, and the Mountain is well worth a visit. But choose a clear day for the best view.

such a nice and easy hike up and down the mountain. the view from the tower overlooking the black forest is breath taking. this is probably the highlight of my visit to Baden Baden.

We took the funicular train up to the top and hiked back down. The view from the top is amazing, and the little park up there would be a perfect spot for a picnic lunch. We hiked the trail back down and were rewarded by the call of a real cuckoo bird (they sound just like the clocks). I wish we'd had more time to hike, what a gorgeous area.

I love this place, it has an ride in the The Merkur Funicular Railway, that pulls you up slowly, by cable on rails, you pay 4 Euros return, the ride up is breath-taking, it almost feels like a roller coaster ride, it is so steep, so if you don't like heights, don't look down, but once you get to the top which takes 5 Minutes, the views are stunning you can see all of Baden-Below with the Black Forest and surrounding Merkur Mountains, there is a beautiful seated restaurant that sit on the edge of the mountain where you can enjoy Brockwurst with fries and a Beer. Some Days they have the Para-gliders and it's amazing to watch. if you walk a little up near the Tower, there are Lido type wooden benches for couples to lay down together in the Sun. If you are fit or like a walk, don't take the lift down, follow the small road it takes one Hour to walk down, and you have some stunning scenery and wildlife, sometimes you only see 2-3 people in the whole Hour, and it brings you down near the Car Park, near the Big Wheel, at the entrance of the Lift, it's a magical place for Romance, and great place for a picnic, or a bite to eat, it's stunning!!! Our visit on May 11 at 10am was the clearest, see forever, I have ever experienced at the top of the Merkur. The historical cable car track was lined with rhododendrons and the top of the mountain was cool and crisp. You could clearly see the Vosges and around the back of the restaurant, the Murg valley and mountains. Sit on the log -- or on a bench - and enjoy watching the sky divers glide over Baden-Baden. Walk up towards the tower and there are wooden recliners for sun bathing. The Merkur is always worth a visit.
