This county museum is titled entirely in German, but it is easy to understand most of the exhibits. It is over 4 floors & offers information on the everyday lives of the people over the last several hundred years. Original manuscripts, paintings, photographs, furniture, fishing gear, boats and tools are all here. The women volunteers do speak English & are eager to interpret what you are seeing. They readily showed us the route to take so we didn't miss anything. My husband & I really loved some of the old time photos--they told a story all their own. The brochures we picked up were in German, but the pictures helped us remember. There are no restrictions on taking your own photos and the admission charge was minimal at 3 Euros each. This is where we purchased a booklet in English that gave great information on Wertheim Castle for 4 Euros. This museum was only open in the afternoon, but we were there in March--not the busy tourist season.

A little vaunted museum tucked away in the picturesque town of Wertheim is worth a couple of hours of your time as it is certainly one of the best 'folk' museums ever seen. Over four floors and 2200 sq metres, it encompasses the most interesting parts of everyday life from the earliest days. For example, one exhibit is a woman's frock which not only had the garment, but the print blocks of the design and the various stages needed to achieve. Original manuscripts; furniture; fishing, boats and tools are all there. The big drawcard for me was to see one of the last 5 standing Leonardo da Vinci double blind staircases - astonishing to see in the original. The museum is very much 'off' the tourist trail in a small town - even though it is only a few steps from the main street - this meant a quiet meander around without the crowds. Two of the most delightful volunteer custodians were pleased to show me their very well laid out museum. Hopefully either Elfriede Muller and Elke Rasche will be on duty - they will enhance the experience and make your visit even more memorable. The little shop in the lobby has a very, very different selection of material to purchase and all at very reasonable prices. This museum deserves a much larger patronage and is very highly recommended.

Originally the historical association also collected glass objects which were given in loan when the glass museum was established. The Museum currently has approximately 19000 objects as well as 1000 coins. In addition to the original collection (history counts von Wertheim, monarchs and mid-class, guilds, folk art and clothing), new themes (such as music, religious history, history of the displaced). Also the collection of paintings of Otto Modersohns as well as graphics and paintings of other artists who have had an influence on city Wertheim are constantly expanded.
