Beautiful cathedral however nothing in comparison to notredame. Had to stand in a big line to enter. The Great Aachen Pilgrimage festival, a centuries-old celebration of relics was going on when we visited. So we were lucky to be a part of it.

This cathedral is gorgeous and so important in history as Charlemagne's place of coronation and governance. It has an eastern influence as exhibited in the beautiful mosaics. Don't miss this spot if you are in Aachen. There is a fee to take pictures but it's not much.

Truly the Cathedral of the Emperors & Kings. Suggest mid-week & arrive early, less crowded for photo opportunities. Look around, look up, even look down. Quietly visit the the side chapels. The chapel of the Blessed Sacrament is beautiful, Marvel @ the St. Nicholas Chapel (c-1350) In the main area take time to view the Pala d'Oro main alter c 1020, (center) Shrine of Charlemagne c. 1215, In back Tomb of Emperor Otto III & above all the Sunburst Madonna. Look down even the modern Cosmatesque floor of the Palatine Chapel area is attractive.

Make sure you take the guided tour to get access to the back of the church and the 1st floor (where the coronation throne resides). The general public is restricted from these areas. English tours are only offered at 2PM daily. My tour guide looked to be a temp replacement and struggled to explain the basics (though she tried her hardest).

I have seen great Cathedrals: St Peters, Notre Dame, Saint Chappelle, Cologne Cathedral,Salzberg among many but Dom Aachen worth the trip.

Definitely have a look round the cathedral if you're visiting Aachen. Many areas are out-of-bounds without a tour guide, so book one in advance. We were there on a day it was closed all but for 2 hours, as the choir was practicing for a pageant for that evening. We could only stand to the rear, but the choir was still there singing when we visited. I did find the staff a bit pushing and rude. Still this is an amazing building, I came to this town to see the Charles, and was very impressed. The whole of down town was wonderful. And I found this city to be easy to navigate by car or foot.I do imagine the times near Christmas and Easter are limited, as the community is active in this church. Many good pubs are near by. A large brass band sang in the street in front of one just down the road from the Dom.

One only needs 15-20minutes to see and appreciate this beautiful building. Very interesting to see the various architectural styles integrated over the years.

We had some spare time during our tour so we decided to visit this place as it was very close to our hotel. The dome has a great history. One should definitely see this dom. Its really worth

Very beautiful cathedral. you can see it from the distance and you cannot fight the urge of getting closer and seeing this magnificent piece of art! Definitely have to visit it - there is a possibility of a guided tour.

Is the name in french for this former capital of french empire of CHARLEMAGNE.It has an octogon made from columns, because the construction of the catedral was inspired from BASILICA SAN VITALE from RAVENA,which was built by the ostrogot king THEODORIC.Charlemagne has seen basilica SAN VITALE during his longobard campaign. The catedral from AIX LA CHAPELLE hosts even Charlemagne's throne, which was built from stone taken from JERUSALEM.

I remained speachless. It is fundumental to visit it while in city of the kings, Aachen. The remarkable work on the walls inside of the Dom lets you breathless and asking yourself: how was possible such an admiring work of art? Who were those who perfectly combined, piece by piece, the mosaic on the walls and created such perfection? Who were the master-masons who constructed this beauty? It is one of the destination´s must-do. You will feel part of the history.
