When visiting El Chalten Loma del Pliegue is the trek many visitors don't know about and for this reason the trail is very quiet. However, the trek is by no means less beautiful than the sister trails Laguna Torre & Laguna de los Tres. The climax of this trek takes you to a ridge offering some of the most breathtaking views in all of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. A spectacular vista comprising of the spires of the Fitz Roy Massif, the Torre Glacier, glacial lakes, Cerro Torre and the Patagonian steppes. Just a couple of things I want to highlight...The trail starts near the ranger station as you enter El Chalten where the buses stop to let the park rangers give a briefing to visitors. From town centre its about a 15 - 20 minute walk to the start. It is impossible to get lost on the trail. The trail is well marked and you even receive a map from the park rangers containing all the routes in the park. Depending on your pace, the trek can take anywhere between 4 and 7 hours to complete round-trip. I started at 1 pm and finished at 6 pm. That included spending two hours at the final Mirador. It was that amazing. The start of the trail is fairly easy-going & pleasant taking you through woodland and along a canyon. There are sections of exposure to sun and chilly wind. Be sure to pack strong sunscreen and dress appropriately. The trail ascends less steeply than the more popular Laguna de los Tres, however, has a higher elevation at the finish. From the mid-section of Loma del Pliegue to the end, it is all gradual uphill. The trail will eventually level off at around 1000 meters. For comparison, Laguna de los Tres goes up 800 meters. Most people upon arrival to El Chalten by bus flock to do Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre and those trails get busy in the first day or two. If you have the luxury of time and are confident the weather forecast will remain stable in the days ahead, do Loma del Pliegue first and the two popular treks later. By doing it this way around, you may find that you will have this trek to yourself and when you get round to the other treks they will be less busy. Furthermore, this way round offer a nice build-up both in views and physical preparation for Laguna de los Tres. This is Patagonia and the weather won't always go your way but try to pick a clear day for this trek. Due to the elevation and how far away the points of the interest are at the final Mirador this trek is best appreciated in clear weather. At least with Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre, there are low-lying views when its cloudy.Loma del Pliegue was a magical & unforgettable experience. I was fortunate to have a spell of stable weather and the views were unobstructed. Adding to the drama, it was late October when I went and there was still winter snow on the ground. Dust off those hiking boots & go.

Went there, it was very foggy and misty and the Mirador was non existent but the hike was still gorgeous with beautiful flowers. Try to pick a clear day if possible, but don't let the weather stop you.

Because this hike isn´t so famous like Laguna De Los Tres it means that it´s not so crowded as well. We met just few people on the way and I really liked it. In the map of El Chalten´s treks it´s ranked very difficult and that it goes all the way up. But that´s not true, it´s not so challenging. And for me it was much easier hike than Laguna de los tres. You have beautiful Fitz Roy views on the way as well. Also I enjoyed more nature here, you just pass trough a beautiful countryside, a long part is in a forest and then you arrive to the part where you go up to Tumbado trough a kind of rocky desert surrounding, which was quite tough, because it was very windy as well. We arrived to Mirador Loma Tumbado and had a beautiful view over the national park. But don´t go there when the sky is not clean in the morning or just cloudy. We didn´t go to the second mirador, because it was too windy to continue the way in the most difficult climb up the mountain, but it´s not necessary because the view is not so different. We did one day famous Laguna De Los Tres - what´s a must- and second day this trek and I was very content with this choice. Because both treks were different.

This walk requires you to walk through the most beautiful autumn forest I've ever walked through in my life. The colours were spectacular! We also saw some failed tame wood peckers which had bright red tufts of hair and were really cool. The bit at the top is fairly strenuous, a bit like the last bit of the Laguna Los Tres hike but not as long. If you don't feel up to it, don't worry as the view isn't that much different to that of the nearby mirador.

Reserve a clear and not too windy day for this hike. In my opinion, this is a must-do if you are in El Chalten, the views from the viewing point and then especially from the peak are absolutely stunning on a good day. The ascent took me about 2h, the path is always upwards, but rarely really steep, very pleasant to walk. Above the vegetation line there is no real protectin from the wind, so make sure you are properly equipped. The ascent from the viewing point to the peak is worth the effort thanks to 360 degree views. There was a small rest of snow in the peak region mid March.

This is in my opinion the best hike in El Chalten. Incredible 360 views. Lots of different scenery. Not as many people. Absolutely stunning

One of the best views on Chalten. Go on a clear day to apreciate it. Also, once we get there, the actual end is all day way up that little mountain! It´s worth the extra effort for views on the other side of the valley.

Nice walk, not to arduous but steady up hill walk. Deep snow made for wonderful scene and a bit of fun. Became a bit deep near the mirador above knee height. Recommend waterproof pants!

My knees were a little unhappy on the descent, but this hike is well worth it. Breathtaking 360 degree views of the Fitz Roy range & surrounding areas. Wear sunscreen, as the last part of the hike is exposed!
